Indian industry body ASSOCHAM calls for raising import duty on steel products.
Indian industry body ASSOCHAM called for raising import duty on steel products from the prevailing five per cent to a minimum of ten per cent so that domestic manufacturers can withstand growing imports from China and CIS countries. The challenging global environment is bringing fierce competitive pressures on performance and price reduction. “The oversupply in international markets is forcing China and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) to dump their steel products like hot rolled coils, cold rolled coils and other coated products into growing markets like India,” said secretary general D.S. Rawat.

World Steel Association: World crude steel output increases by 6.8% in 2011.
World crude steel production reached 1,527 megatonnes (Mt) for the year of 2011. This is an increase of 6.8% compared to 2010 and is a record for global crude steel production. All the major steel-producing countries apart from Japan and Spain showed growth in 2011. Growth was particularly robust in Turkey, South Korea and Italy.
Annual production for Asia was 988.2 Mt of crude steel in 2011, an increase of 7.9% compared to 2010. The region’s share of world steel production increased slightly from 64.0% in 2010 to 64.7% in 2011.

China Hunan Valin 2011 Net Profit Likely CNY50 Mln-CNY90 Mln -Xinhua. Staff Reporters Dow Jones MetalSource Steel
BEIJING (Dow Jones)--Hunan Valin Steel Co. (000932) expects to have swung to a net profit of CNY50 million-CNY90 million last year, the state-run Xinhua News Agency reported Friday. The Shenzhen-listed company, which had a 2010 net loss of around CNY2.6 billion, was boosted by CNY1.17 billion in government subsidies last year, the news agency reported. As the steel industry remains mired in losses, Valin plans to introduce management reforms this year, including at its three major units, Hunan Valin Xiangtan Iron & Steel Co., Valin LY Steel Co. and Hengyang Valin Steel Tube Co., Xinhua said. Hunan Valin plans to try to reduce procurement costs by centralizing its units' iron ore imports, among other measures, the report said. A Valin spokesman couldn't be reached for comment Friday.

It also improves internal surface finish quality of hot rolled tubes and eases mandrel extraction operations. Easy to use, it is sprayed inside the tubes before introducing the mandrel (CONDAT can assist with the choice of suitable spray equipment). Eliminating the need for additional lubricant, CONDATUB C 33 simplifies the process and reduces waste disposal costs. CONDATUB C33 is the economical solution for reducing the overall costs in hot rolling of seamless steel tubes.
CONDAT’s principle philosophy is also to offer products whose chemistry is stable and environmentally responsible. CONDATUB C33 eliminates the need for lubricants containing graphite and phosphates in the workshops, thus offering a healthier working environment for the operators. Without Borax nor SVHC substances, CONDATUB C33 minimizes the inhalation risk of toxic products by the operators and offers a process without effluents.
A range rich in technologies. CONDAT will exhibit at TUBE Düsseldorf 2012 (Hall 5 D16) show a wide range of products adapted to all tube production processes, with in particular very specific lubricants for: Hot rolling operations : - Lubricants for mandrels in powder or liquid form. - Micronized, synthetic graphite dispersions in aqueous media offering an alternative to petroleum products. Russian Stainless Steel Development Association: Stainless Steel Imports to Russia rose +26,4%
According to SpetsStal's estimate, the aggregate volume of imported stainless steel products from Jan to Nov 2011, if compared to the equal period of 2010, rose +26.4% to 223,455 tons. Imports of STS flats rose +28.7%, longs – +55.0%, wire – +20.5% and slabs/ingots – +112.0 Imports of STS seamless and welded tubes decreased by 13.1% and 1.6%, respectively. The structure of STS imports was formed by flats with a share of 68.1% out of the total STS imports to Russia (Jan-Nov 2010 – 66.9%), followed by: longs – 15.6% (12.7%), welded tubes – 6.7% (8.6%), seamless tubes – 5.9% (8.5%), wire – 2.3% (2.4%) and slabs/ingots – 1.5% (0.9%).

Brazil Steel Industry has presented lower revised forecasts.
Despite the all-time high output forecast for 2011 of 35.3 Mt, 2011 was a difficult year for the Brazilian steel industry. The Brazil Steel Institute had to revise its forecasts, which have come out lower. The exceeding steel production capacity compared to demand remains high worldwide (500 Mt) and in Brazil as well (20.2 Mt). Like other countries in Latin America, Brazil has been suffering deeper deindustrialization caused by increased direct and indirect steel importation. The metal-mechanic chain has been strongly impacted. Over 60% of China's exportations to Brazil are of metal-mechanic goods. “Given this scenario, we have had to bring our crude steel forecasts down by 3%”, said the President of the Board of Brazil Steel, André B. Gerdau Johannpeter.

„VG402R“ is a system of drawing, formed by two components: a Die and a Pressure Die. The die has a core that is well dimensioned compared to the holes; it is assembled in fixed and immovable way in its compact casing in standard, commonly used, measures. The pressure die, with cylindrical hole and pointed final part made of hard metal, fits perfectly in the cone entrance of the die, permitting the removal of the lubricant solidification in the cone of the die, during the pauses. The particular structure of the pressure core guarantees efficacy and constancy to the lubrication. The support beat gives more stability and less vibration to the core and consequently less possibilities of breakage and more reduction of wire vibration. Moreover the system VG402R is equipped with a drain hole that permits the possible loss of lubricant, that could be caused by an excess of pressure, to return into the box that contains lubricant. Die and pressure die are assembled in an extremely easy and fast way by the operator without waste of time and without the use of particular tools, as the assemblage is effected with a light manual pressure of the two components. As the core is assembled as it was a normal die, even the possible operation of reconditioning is made easy, in the case you wish to reuse the system more times.
German Steel Association expects stable steel production in 2012.
The German Steel Association (Wirtschaftsvereinigung Stahl, WV) expects for 2012 a crude steel production of around 44 million tonnes. That is, the production will remain stable. "The reduced inventory levels at distributors and processors, caused by the year end, are a good starting position for the steel industry in 2012," said Hans Jürgen Kerkhoff, President of the WV steel. In December 2011, steel companies in Germany produced three million tonnes of crude steel.

Rio Tinto May Close French Plant If Power Prices Increase -Paper Staff Reporters Dow Jones MetalSource Non-Ferrous Metals
PARIS -(Dow Jones)- Rio Tinto PLC (RIO.LN) may close its Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne aluminium plant in France, as its power supply contract with state-controlled power group Electricite de France SA (EDF.FR) is to expire which could lead to substantially higher electricity prices, French business daily Les Echos reports, citing an official from Rio Tinto. Talks between the two companies have been ongoing for more than a year and representatives from the two groups were to meet again Monday, at the request of the French Industry Ministry. Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne employs around 600 people. No one at Rio Tinto nor at EDF was immediately available to comment.

On Friday, 6th January, EUROFER filed an anti-subsidy complaint providing overwhelming evidence that the surges in EU steel imports of Chinese organic coated sheet (OCS) are the result of massive subsidisation. The anti-subsidy complaint complements the anti-dumping investigation on the same product initiated by the Commission end-December 2011 following EUROFER’s complaint (see EUROFER press statement of 25th November 2011). The anti-subsidy complaint exposes the extent to which China has a wide range of specific government support programmes covering all aspects of the steel and OCS industry including capacity investment, production, sales and exports of the product concerned (preferential loans and interest rates, equity programmes, income and other tax arrangements, grants, provision of goods for less than adequate remuneration,...).

This gripper has been realized to have a reduced structural weight; made of steel and having a very high yield point. Both jaws are long enough to grip one coil at a time.
